Benrinnes 15 Year Old Flora and Fauna.

Benrinnes is a Speyside distillery owned by Diageo that mainly produces whisky for Johnny Walker, J&B, and independent bottlers. Aside from a handful of special releases, the Benrinnes 15 Year Old from the Diageo Flora and Fauna series remains the only flagship product Benrinnes produces under its own name. This alone makes it unique, but the downside is the limited details available for this release, particularly the types of casks used for maturation. The consensus is that Benrinnes 15 is aged in refill ex-bourbon and ex-sherry butts, but it’s unclear for how long in each. Other reasons for lugging this bottle back from Scotland are that it’s unlikely I’ll ever see it locally in the U.S., and was curious what an official bottling Benrinnes profile is like, so it seemed like a no-brainer. Let’s get started!

Taken: Neat in a Glencairn glass, rested for about 15 minutes.

Proof: 86.

Price: £62.95, 700ml.

Appearance: Light copper.

Nose

Baked apples, strawberries, toasty malt, toffee, vanilla, subtle orange citrus, dried flowers, chocolate, subtle wood smoke, and allspice. This is an excellent nose that draws you in. With some time and patience, this pour reveals its subtly complex and well-balanced profile.

Palate

The palate has a very nice, creamy mouthfeel that starts with upfront toasty malt, baked apples, orange peel, toffee, a hint of berries, and allspice. The palate isn’t as complex as the nose, but it still hits on the best parts of this profile with a great balance of underlying smoke and spice that never impedes the fruitiness and ex-bourbon barrel characteristics.

Finish

Allspice continues with caramel, orchard fruit, vanilla, and delicate berries, with chocolate and soft leather. With more time, this long finish leaves you with a soft wood smokiness.

Conclusion

Based on the limited info out there, I expected Benrinnes 15 to have a stronger sherry presence, but instead it leans much more toward the ex-bourbon cask side, with the sherry notes playing a smaller role. With more digging, I noticed considerable variation in this profile across reviews and comments, mainly in the sherried notes. It could be a coincidence or a matter of personal interpretation, but it seems the older bottlings show more typical sherry notes than the newer ones, which aligns with my experience. I love a great sherry bomb, but I’m glad this profile is exactly as it is. It also came in handy when comparing it with the SMWS Benrinnes 36.221,15 Year “Meaty Mirepoix.” Although Meaty Mirepoix has a more sherried profile (and much less underlying smokiness), having the Benrinnes 15 made it easier to notice the similarities in the distillate and ex-bourbon cask influence.

Benrinnes 15 Year Old Flora and Fauna is an elegant, highly enjoyable, and very well integrated whisky. I’m impressed by how well this 43% ABV single malt delivers a very flavorful profile, featuring a delicate balance of bold and fruity notes, a creamy mouthfeel, and a subtle smokiness.
